Introducing Supplements Clinic
Who can resist the lure of a quick win and a miracle cure? Despite my many years of training, a mountain of CPD and huge swathes of clinical experience, even I can find the marketing of the latest “life changing” supplement to be almost irresistible. I fight hard not to be sucked into fancy marketing campaigns because not only can it be a waste of money, it can also be dangerous.
Clients come to me with a huge list of supplements which have cost a fortune, don’t seem to be working and, what’s worse, are often interfering with the effectiveness of their prescription medication.
Here are some important examples of the ways popular products can cause health havoc:
Minerals such as zinc and calcium block the absorption of Levothyroxine exacerbating hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue and weight gain,
Taking magnesium with Ramipril or Amlodipine can result in blood pressure falling too low resulting in dizziness and falls,
Slippery elm can block the absorption of oral medication reducing the likelihood that you will get the benefit from your medication that your GP or Consultant intends,
Quercetin can impact the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill with the possibility of unexpected pregnancies,
St John’s Wort can increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia by reducing the body’s exposure to progesterone given as HRT to protect the womb lining.
The decision whether a supplement is right for you requires careful consideration. Quantity, form, timing and length of time needed to assess benefit are all important. Other considerations as to the value of a supplement include:
protein status
nutrient depletions caused by medication which may need addressing
levels of stomach acid
whether the supplement can cross the blood brain barrier
bile flow
gut health esp. Beta-glucuronidase levels.
Having flagged some of the supplement pitfalls, I should say that a well chosen supplement can make a massive difference to how you feel. The devil is in the detail which is why I am introducing a new service - Supplements Clinic. I will bring all of my experience and expertise to bear in supporting you in identifying a safe and effective supplements protocol.
